Front/Space is excited to announce the 2018 Open Call!

We are an artist-run space dedicated to providing a platform for experimental and distinctive projects by artists, academics, curators, performers, writers, and organizers at any stage in their career to realize projects that explore, interpret and participate in the mediation of new social and cultural meanings are highly encouraged.

Front/Space is a storefront apartment located in the heart of downtown Kansas City repurposed for non-commercial exhibitions, installations, readings, screenings, concerts, workshops, forums, research + publishing projects. Front/Space has a unique layout and should be considered when submitting proposals; this layout offers an opportunity for site-specificity within the work itself. Dimensions can be found here.

Front/Space is interested in receiving proposals that can shape the way we think about societies and cultures, popular or otherwise. Exhibitions that allow for meaningful connections to underrepresented communities as well as new interpretations of the unknown are encouraged. We are excited by cross-pollination and the way in which collaboration across professions can invite participants and viewers in ways that are not readily explored in curatorial practices. We invite applicants to propose an event, screening, performance, exhibition, public program or social encounter of any kind in an effort to bring polarized communities closer through the lens of art-making, discussion and installation. We support these initiatives by providing the space and means to realize projects.

Proposals should be sent to [email protected] in a PDF format. Artists should include the following:
-CV or resume for each participating artist
-A description of the project/exhibition (maximum of 750 words)
-Up to ten jpeg images and/or links to up to five minutes of video

Application Deadline:
Sunday, April 1st 11:59 pm. Proposals will be reviewed and selected by a panel made up of community members, artists and professionals in and around Kansas City. Front/Space is committed to making the application process accessible. If you have any questions or limitations when completing the application, please contact [email protected].

BIG NEWS FROM FRONT/SPACE!

After nearly four years, Madeline Gallucci and Kendell Harbin are stepping down from their role as co-directors of Front/Space. They are excited for this transition and look back fondly on their time as co-directors. As a collaborative and community driven initiative that has forged a path as one of of the oldest artist run spaces in Kansas City, passing the torch is fundamental for the sustainability of Front/Space. Harbin and Gallucci plan to continue in their personal creative endeavors and thank Kansas City for the widespread support that they’ve experienced over the last three and a half years.

Harbin and Gallucci welcome Jahaira Aguilar and Patricia Bordallo Dibildox as new co-directors of Front/Space.

Jahaira Yolanda Aguilar arrived to Kansas City in 2013, ultimately making Missouri her new home. Born in San Antonio, Texas and educated at the Kansas City Art Institute, Aguilar is an active member in Kansas City, MO. She is a founding leader of the Artists of Color Alliance (KC), Art Director for Art in the Loop Foundation and an Artist in Residence at the Charlotte Street Foundation. While she considers herself a painter, socially engaged work is at the forefront of what she has focused on during her time at Charlotte Street. She works for The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art as the Executive Office Coordinator.

Patricia Bordallo Dibildox is a Mexican-born artist and arts administrator residing in Kansas City, MO. Originally from San Luis Potosí, Bordallo Dibildox moved to KC in 2002. Following her graduation from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2015, Bordallo Dibildox interned at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy for three months. She currently has a studio residency at The Drugstore where she was awarded a free residency through the Gift of Faith Award. Bordallo Dibildox is also a founding leader of the Artists of Color Alliance (KC), a partner of Sight Review (SF), and was the recipient of a 2015 Charlotte Street Foundation Rocket Grant as Senior Editor of Informality Blog (KC). Her work has been displayed nationally and internationally in Australia. She works for Continuing Education at the Kansas City Art Institute as a Youth + High School Program Specialist.

Together, Aguilar and Bordallo Dibildox look forward to continuing the legacy of Front/Space and are excited to continue to bring local and national artists to Front/Space. Come say hi to them at openings and programs in the future. For now, mark your calendars for the 2018 Open Call.
